Fog Seals

Fog seals are a quick and efficient way to lock in raveling stone on one of your roadways.  For example, a surface treated road can benefit by having some of the loose surface texture “locked in” by and emulsified fog seal.  In the same family of treatments sand seals and scrub seals can also be applied to slow the aging process and water proof the surface.  Note that fog seals are only applied on low volume roads that have a fairly coarse texture as they may reduce surface friction on dense graded hot mix asphalt pavements.  They do provide good contrast with line striping as the appearance of the road is much blacker after application.

Unlike fog seals, rejuvenating agents are generally clear in appearance as they are applied.  Hence, rather than making the pavement look new, they actually make the pavement perform like new.  The biggest benefit to the application of a rejuvenating agent is the fact that they increase the maltene fraction levels in the pavement thereby extending the life of the pavement structure.  It is common for products such as “Reclamite” rejuvenating agents to make up 10-20% of your annual expenditures in a good pavement preservation program.

In general, rejuvenating agents such as “Reclamite” are applied in and around the third year of service life for a new pavement.  For detailed information please contact us.
